- A vehicle fitted to provide living
- accommodation. Originally intended as
- permanent homes, caravans are widely used for
- holiday purposes. Caravans for travelling
- showmen were in use in England by 1840. Gipsy
- caravans became a familiar sight from the
- 1870s onwards, and a few luxury versions were
- made for wealthy people. The first car-towed
- caravan was made by Eccles Motor Transport in
- 1919, the pioneer of today's compact and
- ingeniously fitted `tourer'. Other
- developments have included the large `mobile
- home' and the conversion of commercial vans
- to `motor caravans'.
