  1. A vehicle fitted to provide living
  2. accommodation. Originally intended as
  3. permanent homes, caravans are widely used for
  4. holiday purposes. Caravans for travelling
  5. showmen were in use in England by 1840. Gipsy
  6. caravans became a familiar sight from the
  7. 1870s onwards, and a few luxury versions were
  8. made for wealthy people. The first car-towed
  9. caravan was made by Eccles Motor Transport in
  10. 1919, the pioneer of today's compact and
  11. ingeniously fitted `tourer'. Other
  12. developments have included the large `mobile
  13. home' and the conversion of commercial vans
  14. to `motor caravans'.
